Writers on Writing: Mary Johnson

Mary Johnson discusses her memoir Unquenchable Thirst, one of Kirkus Review's best nonfiction books of 2011. At age 19, Johnson joined the Missionaries of Charity, also known as the Sisters of Mother Teresa of Calcutta. Of her 20 years as a sister, she spent 15 stationed in Rome, where she lived and worked with Mother Teresa. After leaving the sisters in 1997, she completed a Bachelor’s Degree in English at Lamar University and a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing at Goddard College. Johnson's work has been featured in O the Oprah Magazine, Salon, Poets and Writers, the Los Angeles Times, Washington Post, Daily Beast, Bloomberg View and on National Public Radio and The Rosie Show, among others. She blogs for The Huffington Post and serves as creative director of Retreats for A Room of Her Own Foundation. Free.

The Creative Writing Department opens its Writers on Writing course to the public every Monday evening of the semester. Taught by Professor Camille Dungy, the course features faculty and visiting writers reading from their works and discussing their creative process.
