Kakavoulia has published several articles on discourse analysis, media language and narrative and three books on the poetics and aesthetics of literature. Ηer research interests include the cognitive value of narrative, the relation of brain and communication, brain and language, the relation of space, movement and language. Kakavoulia was a member of the editorial board of the Journal of Modern Greek Studies, John Hopkins UP (2007 – 2010). For several years, she has been a member of the Committee for the State Prizes of Literary Translation (Greek Ministry of Culture). She is also a member of the Modern Greek Studies Association in the U.S.
