Maxine Chernoff

A 2013 National Endowment for the Arts fellow in poetry, Maxine Chernoff is the author of six books of fiction and 16 books of poetry. Her previous book, Here, was a finalist for the Northern California Book Award, as were two of her six works of fiction. Her book of stories Signs of Devotion was a New York Times Notable Book of 1993. In 2009 she won the PEN USA Translation Award for a co-translation of the Selected Poems of Friedrich Hoelderlin. She is former editor of the award-winning journal New American Writing and has taught in Exeter, England, Prague and St. Petersburg, Russia, and was a visiting artist at the American Academy in Rome in 2016.

Writers on Writing

The Creative Writing Department opens its Writers on Writing course to the public this spring. Taught by Dodie Bellamy, the course features faculty and visiting writers reading from their works and discussing their creative process.
