As an award-winning filmmaker, author, teacher and feminist, Britta Sjogren found a need to explore why she adores 1940s films that are full of sexism and stereotypes. The Cinema associate professor’s research has resulted in a book and new film series, both titled “Into the Vortex: Female Voice in Film.”

Alumna Shaynee Rainbolt celebrates the four-trombone band swing of composer and arranger Russell Garcia on her latest album. With a voice “sweet as jasmine and honeysuckle, bold as brass and yet as seductive as a candlelit boudoir,” as Jazz Times has written, Rainbolt takes the 1950s–1960s style to Yoshi’s in Oakland on July 22.
