Marshall High Students Unveil Bench Built with SF State's Design Students

WHAT: Unveiling of a community bench designed and built by Thurgood Marshall High students in collaboration with SF State's Industrial Design Outreach (iDo) program.

WHEN: Thursday, April 3 / 8:50 a.m.

WHERE: Thurgood Marshall High / 45 Conkling St. (near Silver Ave.)

WHO: Thurgood Marshall High students Tera Friedman, Thurgood Marshall Computer Graphics teacher Martin Linder, SF State Professor & director of iDo SF State Design & Industry students

WHY: This project introduced Marshall high school students to the basics of design and fabrication. The bench integrates ergonomic, semiotic, and manufacturing subject matter into hands-on learning. Students were trained in computer design programs, rapid model prototyping, and the use of power equipment to make final parts of the bench. A $10,000 grant from the Miranda Lux Foundation provided materials, tools and faculty support.
