World Cultures Dance and Music Celebration: one concert, five continents
Includes styles from Philippines, Brazil, Europe, Iran, Caribbean and U.S.
SAN FRANCISCO, October 24, 2008 — San Francisco State University’s School of Music and Dance presents the World Cultures Dance and Music Celebration at 8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 15, spanning five continents, including distinctive slices of American culture.
Directed by faculty member Ray Tadio, the 31st annual World Cultures Dance and Music Celebration takes place in McKenna Theatre in SF State’s Creative Arts Building. Admission is $15 general and $8 students and seniors.
Uniting global communities on one stage, the concert features guest artists, faculty members and students showcasing dance styles of flamenco, Filipino kulintang, Brazilian capoiera, African-Peruvian, Navajo, clog, Hungarian Gitani, roller skate jammin’ and salsa. The music to be performed includes genres such as Latin jazz, Persian daf frame drums, Filipino kulintang, Brazilian berimbao rhythms, bluegrass, Navajo drum, African-Peruvian and more.
Featured performers include:
• Clog America, performing clog and Navajo hoop dances accompanied by live bluegrass and Navajo music;
• Kumaco, performing African-Peruvian dance accompanied by live music;
• The Palabuniyan Kulintang Ensemble, performing Filipino Muslim dance and live music, led by faculty member Danongan Kalanduyan;
• faculty member Paco Gomes and SF State’s Capoeira Club, performing capoeira dance, accompanied by live berimbao rhythms;
• Professor Emeritus Jerry Duke, performing Hungarian Gitani dance;
• faculty member John Calloway, performing Latin jazz flute;
• students Shahin and Nasim Gorgani, performing Persian daf frame drums;
• student Reggie Dickerson, performing roller skate jammin’ dance;
• student Jade Keyes, performing salsa dance; and
• student Monique Fournier, performing flamenco dance.
Some of the performances will feature dance accompanied by live music, while some will be solely live music. During the latter, Tadio encourages the audience to focus their eyes on the physicality of the musicians.
“Musicians have their own movement when they play. They may not be locomoting per se, but they are dancing,” says Tadio, an assistant professor who joined SF State this fall and has performed with the Ailey II Co., Joyce Trisler Danscompany, Kevin Wynn Collection, David Rousseve, Philippine Dance Co. of New York and Asian American Dance Theater of New York.
