Premiere of student choreography at annual New Moves Dance Showcase Dec. 6-8
Thirteen performances feature lyrical jazz, modern, Afro-Modern, hip-hop/urban fusion
SAN FRANCISCO, November 8, 2007 -- San Francisco State University's School of Music and Dance presents the annual New Moves Dance Showcase at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 6, and 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 7, and Saturday, Dec. 8. Debuting choreography by 13 students, New Moves is a vivid journey of innovative and intoxicating dances featuring diverse fusions of genres including Lyrical Jazz, Modern, Afro-Modern and Hip-Hop/Urban Fusion, accompanied by music. The event, directed by Dance Professor Susan Whipp, will be held in McKenna Theatre, located in SF State's Creative Arts building.
Admission for the Dec. 6 preview is $6. Admission for Dec. 7 and 8 performances is $14 general and $8 for students and seniors.
The New Moves Dance Showcase highlights the top original choreography and performance by SF State students. The student choreographers are: Jasmine Donaldson, Christina Ferrer, Johana Gordon, Edwina Inocencio, Linda Landeros, Yaminah Legohn, Christina McLain, Kasey McEldowney, Jessica McKee, Paige Melvin, Eyla Moore, Charlotte Nehm and Sarah Pemberton. About 50 dancers will perform in solo and group works. Nehm’s performance will be accompanied by live music by Cera Byer.
"Most of the pieces fuse different styles into something original and cross-cultural," Whipp said.
For more than 25 years, New Moves has brought emerging artists' work to stage. Choreography performed at New Moves have gone on to the juried final gala concert at the Southwest Regional American College Dance Festival in each of the past five years. In 2004, student Serenity M-lay's "With This Faith" was among three pieces selected for performance at the biennial National College Dance Festival at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.
Other alumni to gain invaluable experience in the New Moves Dance Showcase include Adia Whitaker, a member of the Alvin Ailey Repertory Co. and artistic director of New York-based Ase Dance Theatre Collective; Elizebeth Randall, who has performed with various Bay Area dance companies and recently won a full scholarship to Tisch School of the Arts at New York University; Kendra Kimbrough Barnes, who runs her own Oakland-based dance ensemble and is co-presenter of the Black Choreographers Festival; and Travis Rowland, who has performed and taught at schools throughout California.
The SF State College of Creative Arts is one of the most prestigious and diverse artistic, academic institutions in Northern California. An internationally acclaimed faculty teaches more than 3,000 undergraduate and graduate students from around the world in renowned programs in Art, Broadcast and Electronic Communication Arts, Cinema, Design and Industry, Music, Dance and Theatre Arts. Location and Parking
McKenna Theatre is located in the Creative Arts building on the SF State campus, 1600 Holloway Avenue at 19th Avenue, San Francisco. Public parking is available in Lot 20 on the SF State campus, accessed from Lake Merced Boulevard between Winston Drive and Font Boulevard. Parking is $1 per hour with a $5 daily maximum.
