The Planets is a project of the International Center for the Arts and the Exploratorium.
• Jeffrey Babcock, initiating lead project coordinator as Executive Director of the ICA, is a leading figure in ISAST, the International Society for Art, Science, and Technology, which explores the interface between art and science.
• Pam Winfrey, project coordinator, is senior artist at the Exploratorium.
• Roger Malina, project advisor is an astrophysicist, ISAST founder and editor-in-chief of the journal, LEONARDO.
• I Made Arnawa, leader of Bali’s famed Taruna Mekar gamelan ensemble, will co-direct the gamelan orchestra.
• Joan Arhelger, lighting designer, will bring the performance set further visual dimension via light and shadows.
• Scientist-artists from a variety of space research centers will contribute visual images, animation, data, and ideas.
Wayne Vitale
Wayne Vitale is a composer, performer, author, teacher, recording engineer, and instrument conservator in the field of Balinese music. He is the director of Gamelan Sekar Jaya, an ensemble of sixty musicians and dancers that has achieved an unparalleled international reputation for its cross-cultural creative work. As a composer, Vitale has created numerous works for gamelan that have directly impacted the evolution of Balinese kebyar music. vitale's recording label, Vital Records, releases critically acclaimed CDs of Balinese music. He has also devoted himself to the metallic art of gamelan tuning, grinding and filing his way throughout the US and Europe to restore Balinese instruments.
